- Think in rooms, not square feet. Almost nobody can picture what 100 square feet looks like, but everybody can picture a bedroom or a garage bay. The easiest way to estimate is to count up the rooms of belongings you need to store, then match that to a unit. The size guide below is written exactly that way, in rooms and real items, not just numbers.
- Account for walking space. If you plan to visit your unit often and pull things in and out, leave yourself an aisle. A unit packed wall to wall uses every inch, but it also means unloading half your things just to reach the box in the back. If you will be in and out regularly, plan a walking path or size up slightly.
- Go one size up for long-term. For a quick store of a few weeks, pack tight and save money. For a longer stay of many months, especially if you will be adding and removing items over time, a little extra room pays off. It beats packing a unit to the ceiling now and having to re-rent a bigger one later.
- Drive-up makes a difference. Being able to pull your vehicle right up to the door saves your back and your time, especially with heavy furniture, appliances, or work equipment. Most of our units across Monahans are drive-up, so loading day is about as painless as it gets.
A quick size guide
- 5x5 (about the size of a small closet): Great for boxes, seasonal decorations, hunting and camping gear, a few totes, or a stack of tools. If you are clearing out one closet or making space in a spare room, this is usually plenty.
- 5x10 (a walk-in closet): Room for the contents of a small bedroom: a mattress set, a dresser, a few boxes, and some odds and ends. A popular pick for folks decluttering or storing furniture while they rearrange the house.
- 10x10 (about half a one-car garage): This one holds the contents of a one- or two-bedroom home: couch, table and chairs, appliances, and a good number of boxes. A solid middle-of-the-road choice when you are between homes or making serious room at the house.
- 10x15 (a large single garage): Enough space for the furnishings of a two- or three-bedroom home, plus larger items like a riding mower, motorcycle, or appliances. A common choice for families in a move.
